Britannia Yachting Center is only a ten minute walk from the great boutique shops in Northport Village
Main Street Shopping

Northport, NY is located on the North Shore of Long Island about 40 miles west of midtown Manhattan between the towns of  Huntington and Smithtown.  Part of the famous “Gold Coast” of  yester-year , it also includes other place names such as Crabmeadow, Eatons Neck, Makamah, Fort Salonga, Middleville, Vernon Valley and borders the Incorporated Village of Asharoken.  It’s natural beauty can be seen most prominently in its magnificent harbor and scenic vistas across Long Island Sound to Connecticut.

Northport’s famous Main Street downtown shopping area offers boutique shopping galore in a 19th century setting dotted by lush, green trees, Victorian homesteads , and a trolly track that still runs down the center and ends at the water. You´ll love our numerous shops, and storefronts, all carefully preserved by the villagers and present-day shopkeepers who, following a centuries-old tradition, tirelessly work to build and improve commerce in what was once called Great Cow Harbor. Looking for places of history, a museum, antiques, a hard-to-find book, the perfect outfit or extraordinary restaurants? We´ve got it all, plus concerts, parades, the annual Great Cow Harbor 10K run, holiday celebrations and a relaxed form of holiday shopping that beats the malls hands down!

Northport extends far beyond her beautiful harbor and nostalgic Main Street. Traveling east or west on Route 25A, this historic highway takes you through Northport´s uptown business district. Here we offer residents and tourists alike many services, shops, banks, markets, and restaurants, from gourmet dining to light lunching.

The first inhabitants of the area were peaceful Indians known as the Matinecocks, whose camp perched on a lakeshore site now occupied by the Lon Island Power Authority (LIPA) power plant.  In 1650 the first white men came to the territory from New Amsterdam and reported their discovery to the Dutch government at The Hague. The report described good fishing, fine meadowlands and mostly level ground suitable for farms and cattle. Six years later, this area, which would be called Great Cow Harbor, was purchased from Chief Asharoken by three Englishmen for seven quarts of liquor, two coats, four shirts and eleven ounces of powder. Relations between the settlers and the Indians were friendly, and the small colony flourished with farming and shell-fishing.

Through the years it’s surroundings have been the inspiration to many artists, authors, actors and families who have shaped it’s history and had the opportunity to call Northport “home”.
